Being More Active
If you feel like you or your family would benefit from being more physically active but don’t know where to start or what to do we can help you.
We will assess your current physical activity levels and provide you with information about a variety of local opportunities to get you started.
Physical activity doesn’t have to mean going to the gym or having to buy expensive kit. There are so many more options such as sports and activities like cycling or walking either as part of an organised group or at any time, on your own or with family and friends. Depending on how active you are our Live Life Well Co-ordinators can work with you to set achievable goals and continue to work with you to achieve recommended levels of physical activity.
Recommended Levels of Physical Activity:
• Basic Department of Health guidelines suggest that, in order to stay healthy, adults aged 19 to 64 years should try to be active every day and should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (such as cycling, brisk walking or dancing) across the course of a week.
– The guidelines also suggest that adults should do strengthening exercises that work all parts of the body on at least 2 days a week.
• Children and young people aged 5 to 18 years should do 60 minutes of physical activity every day – this should range from moderate activity, such as cycling and playground activities, to vigorous activity, such as running and tennis. On three days a week, these activities should involve exercises to strengthen muscles, such as push-ups, and exercises for strong bones, such as jumping and running.
-Children under 5 years should not be inactive for long periods except when asleep. Being physically active every day is important for their healthy growth and development For this age group, activity of any kind should be encouraged, including light activity and more energetic physical activity.
